Saudi Arabia Joins Brunei Darussalam and Qatar in Sending Female Athletes to London 2012

IOC: Saudi Arabia Joins Brunei Darussalam and Qatar in Sending Female Athletes to London 2012

The decision to send Wodjan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani (judo, + 78kg) and Sarah Attar (athletics, 800m) follows earlier confirmation by Brunei Darussalam and Qatar -- the only other NOCs yet to send female athletes to the Games -- that they would also have female athletes competing at London 2012.

(PRWEB) July 18, 2012
The decision to send Wodjan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani (judo, + 78kg) and Sarah Attar (athletics, 800m) follows earlier confirmation by Brunei Darussalam and Qatar -- the only other NOCs yet to send female athletes to the Games -- that they would also have female athletes competing at London 2012.
The two Saudi athletes, invited to the Games by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), were entered by the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee by the official deadline of 9 July.
Attar, 17, said she was honoured by the prospect of competing for her country at London 2012. “A big inspiration for participating in the Olympic Games is being one of the first women for Saudi Arabia to be going,” she said at her training base in San Diego, USA. “It’s such a huge honour and I hope that it can really make some big strides for women over there to get more involved in sport.”
The news was also welcomed by IOC President Jacques Rogge, a long-time advocate of gender equality in sport. “This is very positive news and we will be delighted to welcome these two athletes in London in a few weeks’ time,” he said. “The IOC has been working very closely with the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee, and I am pleased to see that our continued dialogue has come to fruition. The IOC has been striving to ensure a greater gender balance at the Olympic Games, and today’s news can be seen as an encouraging evolution. With Saudi Arabian female athletes now joining their fellow female competitors from Qatar and Brunei Darussalam, it means that by London 2012 every National Olympic Committee will have sent women to the Olympic Games.”
Brunei Darussalam has entered Maziah Mahusin (athletics), while Qatar has entered Nada Arkaji (swimming), Noor Al-Malki (athletics), Aya Magdy (table tennis) and Bahiya Al-Hamad (shooting).
Qatar’s Al-Hamad has been tapped not only to compete at London 2012 but also to carry her country’s flag during the Opening Ceremony. “I’m overwhelmed to have been asked to carry the Qatari flag at the Opening Ceremony,” she said. “It’s a truly historic moment for all athletes.”
The IOC has worked for many decades to promote women in sport, both on and off the field of play. The goal of gender equality is enshrined in the Olympic Charter, the guiding document for all Olympic organisations, while defining strategies to dismantle gender barriers is the primary goal of the IOC’s Women and Sport Commission.
Fifteen years ago at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, 26 NOCs had yet to include female athletes in their delegations. Four years ago in Beijing, the figure had dropped to just three – the three NOCs that have confirmed they will be sending female athletes to London 2012, thus marking a historic milestone in Olympic history.
The Olympic Games have seen female participation rise from 1.8 per cent at London 1908 to 9.5 per cent at London 1948 and more than 42 percent at Beijing 2008. The latter figure is expected to be improved upon again this summer.
Another milestone in the fight for gender equality in sport at London 2012 will be the inclusion of women’s boxing on the Olympic programme, ensuring that women will compete in every sport for the first time in the 116-year history of the modern Olympic Games.
Broadcast quality footage of Sarah Attar (Saudi Arabia), Bahiya Al-Hamad (Qatar), Nada Arkaji (Qatar), Maziah Mahusin (Brunei Darussalam) and the IOC President will soon be available free-of-charge here.

London 2012 Medals Housed at the Historic Tower of London

London 2012 Medals to be Housed at the Historic Tower of London

Rio Tinto, the mining company responsible for the production of the precious metals for the London 2012 Games, will hand over the final Olympic and Paralympic medals to LOCOG for secure storage in the vaults at the Tower of London during the Games.
(PRWEB) July 03, 2012
Rio Tinto, the mining company responsible for the production of the precious metals for the London 2012 Games, will hand over the final Olympic and Paralympic medals to LOCOG for secure storage in the vaults at the Tower of London during the Games.
The gold, silver and bronze medals which will be awarded to the athletes at Games-times, will be securely locked away in the famous vaults at the Tower of London and will remain there until they are needed for the Victory Ceremonies. In total, 4,700 medals have been produced and will be awarded in 805 Victory Ceremonies that will take place in over 30 London 2012 venues across the UK.
Next London Olympics 2012 : London 2012 Medals to be Housed at the Historic Tower of London
A ceremonial event will take place tonight at the Tower at which the final medals will arrive and be taken down to the vaults by Rio Tinto Chairman, Jan du Plessis, and LOCOG Chair, Seb Coe. The arrival of the medals will be announced by a fanfare by the trumpeters of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Collingwood and attended by The Tower’s famous Yeoman Warders and 150 Get Set network school children from the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
Rio Tinto has provided eight tonnes of gold, silver and copper from its Kennecott Utah Copper mine in Salt Lake City, USA and the Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia to make the medals. These were produced by the Royal Mint in South Wales.
The designer of the Olympic Games medals, British artist, David Watkins and the designer of the Paralympic Games medals Lin Cheung, a practising Jewellery artist and senior lecturer in Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martin’s College of Arts and Design, London will also be attending the event.
The Olympic medals’ circular form is a metaphor for the world. The front of the medal always depicts the same imagery at the summer Games - the Greek Goddess of Victory, Nike, stepping out of the depiction of the Parthenon to arrive in the Host City.
The front of the Paralympic medal represents ‘Spirit in motion’. The image struck into the obverse surface of the Paralympic medal is an imagined close-up section of an outstretched wing of Goddess of Victory, Nike. This image represents forward flight, power and lightness - a natural metaphor for the spirit of the Paralympic Games.
LOCOG Chair, Seb Coe said: ‘For an athlete, winning an Olympic or Paralympic medal represents the conclusion of thousands of hours of training and reaching the highest level in sport. The Victory Ceremonies then provide the moment they can truly celebrate their success. It’s great that the London 2012 medals will be kept safe and secure at the Tower of London until then.’
Rio Tinto Chairman, Jan du Plessis said: ‘Metals from our mines in the mountains of Utah and the deserts of Mongolia have now been transformed into these beautiful gleaming medals. All 65,000 Rio Tinto employees around the world are immensely proud to be playing a small part in the excitement of London 2012.’
Minister for Sport and the Olympics, Hugh Robertson said: ‘To the athletes competing to win these medals they are as precious as the Crown Jewels, so it is fitting that they should be stored for safe keeping in the same iconic location.’
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said: ‘For centuries the Tower of London has protected some of this country's greatest treasures so there can be no better sanctuary for the 2012 medals - the most precious possession any athlete could hope to possess - than at this world famous iconic landmark.’
The first medals to be awarded will be on the 28 July for the Shooting event. During a Victory Ceremony the athletes who came first, second and third stand on a podium, with the winner in the middle. Their names are called out and the medals and are given to them by an official: gold for first place, silver for second and bronze for third.

Facebook Launches Olympic Hub for Following Athletes, Teams and Sports, Social Media Agency fishbat Details the Launch

Social Media Agency, fishbat, discusses the launch of Facebook's “Explore London 2012 on Facebook” portal. The portal itself is not a page that can be ‘liked’, but it serves as a hub that allows users to locate the fan pages of athletes, national teams and sports.

Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) June 19, 2012
On Monday, June 18, 2012, Facebook launched its “Explore London 2012 on Facebook” portal. The portal itself is not a page that can be ‘liked’, but it serves as a hub that allows users to locate the fan pages of athletes, national teams and sports.

Next London Olympics 2012 : Facebook Launches London 2012 Olympic Hub for Following Athletes

In anticipation for this summer’s 2012 Olympics, Facebook has launched this new portal, which collects the official fan pages of various athletes, national teams and sports. This portal is a separate entity from the Olympics’ official hub, which contains similar information but is not Facebook-specific. This portal is also separate from the Olympics fan page, which has 2.8 million fans. The Summer Olympics begin Friday, July 27 in London, England.
Many athletes these days use social media to interact with their fans, so nearly all of the popular athletes are represented. “This hub is a great way for Facebook users to find and follow their favorite athletes, countries and sports as the Olympics near,” says Justin Maas, Social Media Account Manager at fishbat. The hub will not contain any advertisements. Noticeably missing are athletes from China, since Facebook is banned in that country. Maas states, “The list of athletes seems pretty sparse at the moment, but I expect Facebook to continue to add pages as we approach the start of the Olympics.”

Olympic Flame Reaches Summit of Snowdon

The Olympic Flame is carried on the highest point of the London 2012 Torch Relay by Sir Chris Bonington.
(PRWEB) May 31, 2012
The Olympic Flame is carried on the highest point of the London 2012 Torch Relay by Sir Chris Bonington.
  • Olympic Flame visits the second highest peak in the UK and the highest point on the London 2012 Torch Relay
  • Flame carried at the summit by famous mountaineer, Sir Chris Bonington
  • Images are available to download here
The Olympic Flame has visited the summit of Snowdon, the second highest peak in the UK, on day 11 of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay – presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung.
The Flame travelled up the 1,085 metres in a miner’s lantern which was carried on the Snowdon Mountain Railway, which takes some of the 350,000 people who visit Snowdon each year, to the summit.
At the summit the Olympic Flame was carried to the highest point on the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay by world renowned mountaineer, Sir Chris Bonington, who was returning to place where he started climbing. He made the first British ascent of the North Wall of the Eiger in 1962 and led the expedition that made the first ascent of the South Face of the Annapurna in 1970, the biggest and most difficult in the Himalaya at the time. He went on to lead the successful expedition making the first ascent of the South West Face of Everest in 1975 and then reached the summit of Everest himself in 1985 with a Norwegian expedition.
Chris, said: “This was a very special moment for me and it totally exceeded all my expectations. I think it's not only the honour of carrying the Olympic Flame to the top of Snowdon, but also the fact it’s part of a long journey for me which goes back to 1952 when I first started climbing here on Snowdon and spent New Year’s Eve in an empty cafe in the bitter cold. So this really is a lovely exercise of passage for me and it was lovely to share it with my fellow climbers and people who love the hills and to feel their warmth and approval.”
Snowdon or Yr Wyddfa in Welsh, meaning tomb or monument, is located in the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales. It covers 823 square miles and is home to over 26,000 people. At the summit the temperature can reach 30 centigrade in the summer and -20 centigrade in the winter. The winds can get up to 150 mph.
Carwyn Jones, First Minister of Wales, said. "The Olympic Torch Relay has provided Wales with a wonderful opportunity to show the world just what we have to offer as it has travelled past some of our best known landmarks from historic castles in Caerphilly and Beaumaris to modern icons like the Millennium Stadium, through our towns and cities and along our stunning coastline. What better way to show the natural beauty of our country than to have the Torch visit our highest peak with one of the world best-known adventurers."

The packages will be available via the Footage library – accessible from the Media Centre on london2012.com and direct from this linkhttp://footagelibrary.london2012.com. Thomas, who will carry the Flame in Worcester, joined the Parachute Regiment in 2001 and is a veteran of multiple tours of Northern Ireland, Iraq & Afghanistan. On his last Afghan tour in 2008, Tom triggered a booby trap while covering his platoon moving forward. The blast took off both his feet and the severity of his wounds led to amputation of both legs and one arm.
The evening celebration will take place at Worcester County Cricket Ground from 4pm. The evening celebration will feature a variety of entertainment staged by LOCOG and the three Presenting Partners of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay - Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung.
The line-up includes music from Labrinth, a dance troupe who will provide a unique fusion of street performance, theatre and sport and dance act Twist and Pulse. A locally recruited community choir will also perform.
Towards the end of the two-hour show, the last Torchbearer of the day - Sally Flood, from Bromsgrove who was nominated for her charity work - will light a celebration cauldron on stage at the event which will enable the Olympic Flame to be seen by the audience.
The Olympic Torch Relay will also include exciting moments with extreme heights, high speeds and breath-taking spectacles and the Flame will be travelling by different methods of transport including horseback, bicycle, tram and steam-train. Every county in England and every Local Authority area in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales will host the Olympic Flame, with visits reaching as far north as Lerwick in Scotland to St Helier in the south, Lowestoft in the east and Enniskillen in the west. Many thousands of people are expected to welcome the Olympic Flame along the route each day and celebrate the achievements of the Torchbearers in parks, squares and streets right around the UK.
The convoy travelling with the Flame consists of 14 core vehicles, including a pilot car, Torchbearer drop-off and pick-up shuttles, Presenting Partner vehicles, a media vehicle, a command car and security vehicles. The lead convoy, including the Presenting Partner vehicles, will provide entertainment for the crowds. The Torchbearer will follow some 5 to 7 minutes later.
A crew of approximately 350 people will be working each day of the Relay. Core teams of LOCOG staff, the Metropolitan Police Torch Security Team, Presenting Partners, host Police Forces and host Local Authorities will be working together throughout the 70 days.

About the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Presenting Partners:
As the longest standing Presenting Partner of the Olympic Torch Relay, Coca-Cola will be using its heritage and experience to spread excitement across the UK ahead of London 2012. Coca-Cola's national nomination campaign - Future Flames – has focused on finding inspirational young people from across the country to have the once in a lifetime opportunity to carry the Olympic Flame. This summer Coca-Cola will celebrate these Future Flames: young people who use their passions in areas like sport and physical activity, music and dance, and community and the environment; to spread happiness in their local communities.
As the only National Presenting Partner of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay, Lloyds TSB will be taking the inspiration and excitement of the Olympic Flame right to the heart of communities across the UK. As part of Lloyds Banking Group, Bank of Scotland will be the National Presenting Partner in Scotland. We are creating as many opportunities as possible for communities the length and breadth of the UK to get involved as the Flame travels past their front doors. Lloyds TSB’s troupe of performers the Flame Followers will be travelling ahead of the Flame to excite crowds with a unique fusion of street performance, theatre and sport celebrating the endeavour, athleticism, agility and skill of Olympic sporting heroes, Team GB.
Lloyds Banking Group is Britain’s biggest corporate investor in UK communities and in 2011 invested £85 million and as part of the Group’s Community Investment Programme, we’ve launched the Lloyds Banking Group Community Fund to give back to the communities in which we operate and pass through on our journey with the Olympic Flame. We’re inviting everyone to visit the Lloyds TSB stand at each Evening Celebration to vote for a community project in their area that inspires and supports young people. By voting at the Evening Celebration members of the public will automatically enter a draw to win four tickets to London 2012. The two projects that receive the most votes at each locality will each win a £5,000 grant from Lloyds Banking Group. At the Lloyds TSB site members of the public will also have the opportunity to have their photo taken with the Olympic Torch, meet Lloyds TSB Local Heroes – the future stars of Team GB and ParalympicsGB – and get up close to our Flame Followers.
