The decision to send Wodjan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani (judo, + 78kg) and Sarah Attar (athletics, 800m) follows earlier confirmation by Brunei Darussalam and Qatar -- the only other NOCs yet to send female athletes to the Games -- that they would also have female athletes competing at London 2012.
The two Saudi athletes, invited to the Games by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), were entered by the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee by the official deadline of 9 July.
Attar, 17, said she was honoured by the prospect of competing for her country at London 2012. “A big inspiration for participating in the Olympic Games is being one of the first women for Saudi Arabia to be going,” she said at her training base in San Diego, USA. “It’s such a huge honour and I hope that it can really make some big strides for women over there to get more involved in sport.”
The news was also welcomed by IOC President Jacques Rogge, a long-time advocate of gender equality in sport. “This is very positive news and we will be delighted to welcome these two athletes in London in a few weeks’ time,” he said. “The IOC has been working very closely with the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee, and I am pleased to see that our continued dialogue has come to fruition. The IOC has been striving to ensure a greater gender balance at the Olympic Games, and today’s news can be seen as an encouraging evolution. With Saudi Arabian female athletes now joining their fellow female competitors from Qatar and Brunei Darussalam, it means that by London 2012 every National Olympic Committee will have sent women to the Olympic Games.”
Brunei Darussalam has entered Maziah Mahusin (athletics), while Qatar has entered Nada Arkaji (swimming), Noor Al-Malki (athletics), Aya Magdy (table tennis) and Bahiya Al-Hamad (shooting).
Qatar’s Al-Hamad has been tapped not only to compete at London 2012 but also to carry her country’s flag during the Opening Ceremony. “I’m overwhelmed to have been asked to carry the Qatari flag at the Opening Ceremony,” she said. “It’s a truly historic moment for all athletes.”
The IOC has worked for many decades to promote women in sport, both on and off the field of play. The goal of gender equality is enshrined in the Olympic Charter, the guiding document for all Olympic organisations, while defining strategies to dismantle gender barriers is the primary goal of the IOC’s Women and Sport Commission.
Fifteen years ago at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, 26 NOCs had yet to include female athletes in their delegations. Four years ago in Beijing, the figure had dropped to just three – the three NOCs that have confirmed they will be sending female athletes to London 2012, thus marking a historic milestone in Olympic history.
The Olympic Games have seen female participation rise from 1.8 per cent at London 1908 to 9.5 per cent at London 1948 and more than 42 percent at Beijing 2008. The latter figure is expected to be improved upon again this summer.
Another milestone in the fight for gender equality in sport at London 2012 will be the inclusion of women’s boxing on the Olympic programme, ensuring that women will compete in every sport for the first time in the 116-year history of the modern Olympic Games.

Oscar Pistorius will make history by becoming only the sixth athlete ever to compete at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The 25-year-old has been chosen for the Olympic individual 400m and 4x400m relay team before defending his T44 100m, 200m and 400m titles at the Paralympic Games, becoming the first man ever to compete in both Games in a summer.
Pistorius' individual 400m place had looked doomed after he missed his final opportunity to clock a sub-45.3second time - the Olympic 'A' standard time - at the African Championships in Benin last week.

However, the South African Sport Confederations and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) overlooked its selection policy by naming Pistorius in its London 2012 squad on Wednesday.
"Today is truly one of the proudest days of my life," Pistorius said in a statement.
"To have been selected to represent Team South Africa at the London 2012 Olympic Games in the individual 400m and the 4x400m relay is a real honour and I am so pleased that years of hard work, determination and sacrifice have all come together.
"I have run two Olympic ‘A’ standard times over the past 12 months and with the time I ran at the African Championships last week I know my speed and fitness are constantly improving so that I will peak in time for the Olympics."
Pistorius helped South Africa to 4x400m silver at the World Championships in Daegu last year, although he did not take part in the final.
The South African is known as "the fastest man on no legs" and competes with the aid of prosthetic running blades, hence his other moniker ‘Blade Runner’.
Pistorius was born without fibulas, one of the bones that runs from the knee to the ankle, and had both legs amputated below the knee when he was just 11 months old.
"Today is really one of the happiest days of my life! Will be in @London2012 for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games!” he tweeted.
“Thank you to everyone that has made me the athlete I am! God, family and friends, my competitors and supporters! You have all had a hand!”

Rio Tinto, the mining company responsible for the production of the precious metals for the London 2012 Games, will hand over the final Olympic and Paralympic medals to LOCOG for secure storage in the vaults at the Tower of London during the Games.
The gold, silver and bronze medals which will be awarded to the athletes at Games-times, will be securely locked away in the famous vaults at the Tower of London and will remain there until they are needed for the Victory Ceremonies. In total, 4,700 medals have been produced and will be awarded in 805 Victory Ceremonies that will take place in over 30 London 2012 venues across the UK.

A ceremonial event will take place tonight at the Tower at which the final medals will arrive and be taken down to the vaults by Rio Tinto Chairman, Jan du Plessis, and LOCOG Chair, Seb Coe. The arrival of the medals will be announced by a fanfare by the trumpeters of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Collingwood and attended by The Tower’s famous Yeoman Warders and 150 Get Set network school children from the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
Rio Tinto has provided eight tonnes of gold, silver and copper from its Kennecott Utah Copper mine in Salt Lake City, USA and the Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia to make the medals. These were produced by the Royal Mint in South Wales.
The designer of the Olympic Games medals, British artist, David Watkins and the designer of the Paralympic Games medals Lin Cheung, a practising Jewellery artist and senior lecturer in Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martin’s College of Arts and Design, London will also be attending the event.
The Olympic medals’ circular form is a metaphor for the world. The front of the medal always depicts the same imagery at the summer Games - the Greek Goddess of Victory, Nike, stepping out of the depiction of the Parthenon to arrive in the Host City.
The front of the Paralympic medal represents ‘Spirit in motion’. The image struck into the obverse surface of the Paralympic medal is an imagined close-up section of an outstretched wing of Goddess of Victory, Nike. This image represents forward flight, power and lightness - a natural metaphor for the spirit of the Paralympic Games.
LOCOG Chair, Seb Coe said: ‘For an athlete, winning an Olympic or Paralympic medal represents the conclusion of thousands of hours of training and reaching the highest level in sport. The Victory Ceremonies then provide the moment they can truly celebrate their success. It’s great that the London 2012 medals will be kept safe and secure at the Tower of London until then.’
Rio Tinto Chairman, Jan du Plessis said: ‘Metals from our mines in the mountains of Utah and the deserts of Mongolia have now been transformed into these beautiful gleaming medals. All 65,000 Rio Tinto employees around the world are immensely proud to be playing a small part in the excitement of London 2012.’
Minister for Sport and the Olympics, Hugh Robertson said: ‘To the athletes competing to win these medals they are as precious as the Crown Jewels, so it is fitting that they should be stored for safe keeping in the same iconic location.’
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said: ‘For centuries the Tower of London has protected some of this country's greatest treasures so there can be no better sanctuary for the 2012 medals - the most precious possession any athlete could hope to possess - than at this world famous iconic landmark.’
The first medals to be awarded will be on the 28 July for the Shooting event. During a Victory Ceremony the athletes who came first, second and third stand on a podium, with the winner in the middle. Their names are called out and the medals and are given to them by an official: gold for first place, silver for second and bronze for third.

With only a month to go to the London 2012 Olympic Games the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has today officially opened the Main Press Centre (MPC) which will host up to 6,000 accredited press and photographic media during Games time.

With only a month to go to the London 2012 Olympic Games the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has today officially opened the Main Press Centre (MPC) which will host up to 6,000 accredited press and photographic media during Games time.

The MPC will provide 31,000 square metres of office space across four floors of workspace for journalists, photographers, accredited non-rights holding broadcasters, as well as IOC and LOCOG staff during the Games. Across the Games it will be open for 52 days with the Catering Village serving an estimated 480,000 meals and 1.6 million cups of tea over 24 hours a day.
The MPC will become a ‘home from home’ for the world’s media with state-of-the-art media facilities to ensure media can report on the Games. A 200 metre-long High Street will feature a range of shops and services including a post office and dry cleaners, pharmacy and general store.
LOCOG Chair Sebastian Coe said: ‘Like the athletes competing at London 2012, the world’s writers and photographers who will be based in the MPC are at the top of their profession. We will offer them state of the art facilities so they can tell the extraordinary stories that will come out of the Games. This is our first venue on the Olympic Park to open for business and we are ready to welcome the world’s media as they come and set up their office.’
With the sporting action a mere month away, LOCOG has also announced today that spectators attending the Games will be treated to a programme of comprehensive and innovative sport presentation for the Games, including in-ear commentary, music, presenters for different sports - and a few other surprises.
The sports presentation experience for spectators is set to entertain and educate, reflecting the London 2012 vision of connecting more young people with sport. Each venue will have a tailored sports presentation programme offering different experiences best suited to sports - ensuring the spectator experience is as good as possible.
A music library of 2012 songs with five music themes – energy, primetime, extreme, heritage and world stage – has been compiled. Each theme will be tailored for specific sports, for example heritage for Tennis at Wimbledon or extreme for BMX.
A unique music programme for the Olympic Games, ‘Rock the Games’ is being created which features live performances and exclusive new recorded tracks from various artists.
Five official songs have been composed for ‘Rock The Games’, led by chart-topping band Muse whose track 'Survival' has been written for the Games and will be played at various sport sessions. The track is available for download from Thursday 28th June. The other four official songs are by Elton John vs Pnau (released July 16th) Delphic (released July 23rd), Chemical Brothers (released July 30th) and Dizzee Rascal (released August 6th).
In addition, Scissor Sisters and Rizzle Kicks are just two of the artists that are set to play surprise gigs at some of the Olympic venues.
Other London 2012 venues will see exciting performances from leading dancers including the English National Ballet and street crews choreographed by Peridot. Acrobatics, cheerleading from Newham’s Ascension Eagles, sport demonstrations and sport skills’ shows including jump rope from Get Tricky. Music will also be provided by military bands from the Royal Marines, Army and Royal Air Force and DJs providing a lively entertainment programme for spectators.
Films, including ‘Sport A-Z’ for Olympic and Paralympic sports, will be shown before each session allowing spectators to get an overview of the sport in a dynamic and engaging way. The films will use actions shots of former and current athletes as well as graphical animations and motion capture avatars demonstrating the sports.
All venues will have presenters who will act as anchors in venues, appearing on the big screens. They will host each session and guide the spectators through all the key sporting elements, interacting with the crowd, interviewing attending athletes and celebrities and keeping everyone informed of key timings. There will be a mixture of established presenters including Ben Shephard and Gethin Jones as well as up and coming talent such as Aissetou N’gom. Other young presenters were also recruited through universities, sports clubs, drama and performing arts groups throughout the UK - over 750 budding presenters applied to work at the Games and 13 were selected to be part of the London 2012 presenting team.
As well as announcers and commentators, a number of venues will have in-ear commentary radios available for purchase by spectators, giving access to live expert analysis of the competition. The radio will be available for sports where a number of elements are happening simultaneously on the field of play or where there are judged elements which may not be easily understandable for those new to the sport. All commentators will complete a workshop with the RNIB to make sure that the commentary will also be useful for sight impaired visitors.
Debbie Jevans, Director of Sport said: ‘Inspiring people to engage with sport has always been central to our vision. There are 26 Olympic sports and many people will be seeing these for the first time so we will explain some of the intricacies in an innovative and informative way. We also want to ensure the way we present sport adds to the experience of the spectators in the venues and builds the atmosphere. This will be a special summer and we are grateful to everyone who has given their time and expertise over the past years.’
An entertainment programme will also run throughout the day from locations around the Olympic Park. Roaming performers will entertain the crowds while they explore the Park. A bandstand will also offer up-and-coming performers the opportunity to perform in front of thousands of people in the Park during the Games.
In addition to the entertainment around the Park there will be chances to take a photo with a mascot, visit sponsor showcases, pin trading and a chance to watch the action on the Park Live Site.
LOCOG today has also issued ‘5 top tips’ for ticket holders coming to the Games. These are:
1. Be prepared for security checks when you arrive: this will be like taking an international flight at an airport. It will be busy and you will have to queue, so get there early – check http://www.london2012.com for your recommended arrival time.
2. Bring as little as possible with you: the more you bring, the longer it will take to go through security. One small soft-sided rucksack or handbag is allowed per person – this must fit under your seat. If you have a ticket for Football, we strongly suggest you do not bring a bag – if you do, your entry will be delayed and you may miss your event.
3. Read the lists of prohibited and restricted items before you leave: You cannot bring in liquids over 100ml*, including water – but you can bring an empty plastic water bottle and fill it up at water points inside venues. There is a wide range of food available to buy, but if you need to bring your own food, it must fit inside your bag.
4. Leave plenty of time to travel to your venue: London and the UK will be extremely busy and very different to what you’re used to. Use the spectator journey planner to find the best route and, where necessary, book your travel to make sure you get to your event on time. Ticket holders for events in and around London can use their Games Travelcard for travel in London zones 1-9.    
5. Please remember the only way to pay is by Visa (debit, credit or prepaid card) or cash.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) announced today that authentic London 2012 Torches will be available from an official online auction throughout the Torch Relay.
The auction will take place at http://www.london2012.com/auction and the proceeds will help subsidise the costs of Torches to Torchbearers and contribute towards the staging of the Games.
Each Torch is packaged in an Olympic Torch Relay collectors box and comes with a certificate of authenticity and unique serial ID number to protect customers. Each Torch will be available on the auction website for approximately 7 – 14 days.

Torches will be released in special limited editions marking significant moments along the Relay and featuring signed metallic shards by athletes and celebrities.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today announced that it will live stream the London 2012 Olympic Games in 64 territories on the IOC’s channel on YouTube http://youtube.com/olympic.
During the Olympics Games (27 July to 12 August), sports fans in these 64 territories across Asia and Africa will be able to enjoy live coverage of the events as well as highlight clips on this digital platform — free-of-charge. Viewers from these territories will be able to watch the streams on the IOC’s YouTube channel, accessible online or on Internet-enabled devices like smart/mobile phones and other YouTube-enabled devices.
The live-streaming on the IOC’s YouTube channel will provide exclusive digital access to the London 2012 Olympic Games in territories where digital broadcast rights have not already been acquired by the IOC’s broadcast partners:

Fans will also be able to catch up on highlights and full events — all organised by the day, medal event or the sport. The IOC channel will also continue to feature historic content from past Olympic Games. In total, the IOC’s YouTube channel will offer over 2,200 hours hours of sporting event coverage from London 2012, including all the medals finals.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has confirmed further details of the Olympic Games tickets which will be available in the general sale, which starts at 11am on Wednesday 23 May 2012.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has confirmed further details of the Olympic Games tickets which will be available in the general sale, which starts at 11am on Wednesday 23 May 2012. 
  • No availability in Athletics, Cycling, Equestrian, Tennis, Swimming, Ceremonies, Canoe Slalom, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Modern Pentathlon, Synchronised Swimming, Triathlon
  • Good availability of football tickets, including £20 tickets;
  • Majority of remaining non-football tickets are at the higher price points
There are several sports which will not be available for sale as all available tickets have been sold. These are:
Athletics, Athletics (Marathon), Canoe Slalom, Cycling (BMX, Road and Track), all Equestrian (Dressage, Eventing and Jumping), Rhythmic Gymnastics, Modern Pentathlon, Swimming, Marathon Swimming and Synchronised Swimming, Tennis, Triathlon and Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
There are still some £20 tickets available in the following sports;
Boxing, Fencing, Football, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Volleyball, Weightlifting and with limited availability, in Judo and Wrestling (both Freestyle and Greco-Roman).
There is still good availability in the following sports, but at higher price points from £45 to £450.
Archery, Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Canoe Sprint, Diving, Handball, Hockey
There is limited availability in the following price points in the following sports with tickets only available at the higher price points from £45 to £450.
Race Walk, Mountain Biking, Artistic Gymnastics, Rowing, Sailing and Water Polo.
There is low availability in Gymnastics (Trampoline) and Shooting, with tickets starting from £40 to £185.
There is very low availability for tickets to medal events. Only higher priced tickets are available for the majority of the medal events.
Tickets for the Olympic Park are still available.
Customers can purchase up to 4 tickets per session, and can purchase up to 4 sessions in one transaction for all available sports apart from football. More tickets are available for football sessions – between 20 and 30 tickets per session to encourage groups to attend.
LOCOG Commercial Director Chris Townsend commented, "Our priority has been to get as many people who missed out in the sales process last year to the Games. We have delivered on our promise and now another 150,000 people have successfully purchased up to 4 tickets each. We are now putting the remaining tickets back on general sale. Customers will be able to browse the website for 24 hours, from 11am today (22 May 2012) to see what tickets are available. Wednesday’s sale is a live sale, and, like other high demand events including pop concerts, we expect the website to be very busy and customers may well be held in queues for over 30 minutes at peak times’

Thousands of cheering Britons lined the streets of towns and cities across Cornwall and Devon as the Olympic torch was carried over 136 miles from Land’s End to Plymouth Hoe on the first day of its 8,000-mile relay around the UK. On 27 July the torch will ignite the cauldron at London’s Olympic Stadium to mark the start of the 2012 Games. More than 130 ordinary people and sports celebrities including Olympicswimming star Duncan Goodhew carried the torch through Falmouth, Truro and the Eden Project at the start of its 70-day journey around the UK.
The Olympic flame arrived at Culdrose in Cornwall from Athens on a golden aircraft called "The Firefly" on Friday in four custom-made lanterns. It was carried off the plane by Princess Anne, IOC Member and the president of the British Olympic Association, and then used to light a cauldron to mark the start of the Olympic Torch Relay by football hero David Beckham. “Eight thousand inspirational torchbearers are all set to bring the magic of the Games to everyone's doorstep,” said Nick Clegg, the deputy prime minister, who was at Culdrose to welcome the London 2012 delegation. “With every step, the excitement will build. Ten weeks from now, the world will watch as the flame arrives at the Olympic Stadium, bringing with it the hopes of a nation."
A gold-liveried air rescue Sea King helicopter flew the torch to Land’s End early on Saturday, where at 7.08am it was passed to the triple Olympic gold medallist sailorBen Ainslie, the first of 8,000 torch-bearers, in front of 3,500 people. "It's amazing,” he said. “For me, growing up in this part of the world, in Cornwall, for the Olympic Torch to set off from here around the nation, is a fantastic moment for the UK, for London 2012. Very exciting." Ainslie carried the torch 300m before ‘kissing’ it on to Anastasi Swallow, a junior surf champion who has represented her country four times. “This is really when the Games begin,” said Paul Deighton, the London 2012 Organising Committee’s chief executive. “Through these 70 days we’ll see some magic in our communities.”
An estimated nine million people are expected to come out and watch the torchbearers, as they run through over one thousand communities, passing landmarks such as Stonehenge, and coming within 10 miles of 95 per cent of the UK population.
“This is an extraordinary moment that has been 10 years in the making,” said Games organiser Sebastian Coe.
