Gun sales in Colorado dramatically jump after Movie Theater attack

Background checks for people wanting to buy guns in Colorado jumped more than 41 percent after Friday morning's shooting at an Aurora movie theater, and firearms instructors say they're also seeing increased interest in the training required for a concealed-carry permit. "It's been insane," Jake Meyers, an employee at Rocky Mountain Guns and Ammo in Parker, said Monday. When he arrived at work Friday morning — just hours after a gunman killed 12 and injured 58 others at the Century Aurora 16 theater — there already were 15 to 20 people waiting outside the store, Meyers said. He called Monday "probably the busiest Monday all year" and said the basic firearms classes that he and the store's owner teach are booked solid for the next three weeks, something that hadn't happened all year. . . .

People are talking about buying hunting rifles, not able to buy pistols.  This is from The Australian newspaper:

MILOS, a gentle-natured civil servant in a Greek government agency, made a startling confession over a beer in an outdoor cafe in central Athens yesterday."I'm thinking of buying a gun to protect my family," he said in a late-night discussion about the tense lead-up to Sunday's national election. "I have never even considered owning a gun before, but I am seriously worried about what might happen after the election."
Gun-shop owners in Athens say the 37-year-old father of one is not alone, reporting rising interest in purchases for personal safety. . . .
Street violence and petty crime have risen during a savage slump that has cut average incomes by 20 per cent, and the leftist radicals who like to hijack peaceful protests over the economy are now being overshadowed by neo-Nazi thugs who have carried out at least one attack a day on immigrants and political opponents in the past week.
With fears Sunday's election could plunge the nation deeper into economic distress, there are widespread concerns the nation is about to see new levels of street crime and political violence.
Criminologist Vassilis Karydis, an academic at the University of Peloponnese, said there had been a rise in "attacks on people in the street to steal things like wallets, mobile phones and jewellery".
"There has certainly been a rise in robberies in the home, which is partly a rational response by criminals to the fact that many people, especially the elderly, have lost faith in banks and are keeping large amounts of money in their homes," he said. "Many (of the culprits) are jobless immigrants and some are drug addicts." . . .

Zip guns were always very easy to make, but these seem like a dangerous and poorly done cousin.  You need a metal tube to contain the explosion, and plastic just doesn't do it.

That Breyer demands armed police protection provided at taxpayer expense illustrates no small amount of elitist hypocrisy considering his dissent in the landmark District of Columbia v. Bizarre zero tolerance policy gets Detroit grounds keeper fired

A grounds keeper and his foreman were both fired.  Chevilott wanted to give the gun to the police, but they didn't arrive so he had to give it to the police after he was done with work.  From Fox News:

A Detroit groundskeeper, who turned in a loaded handgun he found hidden in weeds while working, was fired by the Wayne County Department of Public Services, MyFoxDetroit.com reports.
John Chevilott, who is just two years shy of retirement, found the loaded snub-nosed revolver on May 3 when he and his crew were mowing a lawn in Wayne County. Chevilott secured the gun, waiting for police to drive by so he could hand it over to them. . . .
According to a Wayne County spokeswoman and the rules, employees aren't allowed to possess a weapon on work property.
Chevilott says he didn't bring a weapon to work. He found it on the job. . . .
